What is mechanical spinal traction?
Mechanical traction uses a specialized table to apply a controlled, sustained stretch along the spine. That stretch increases the space between vertebrae and reduces pressure on compressed nerve roots, easing the pain, numbness and tingling that the pressure causes. Sessions are passive and most patients find them comfortable.
Mechanical traction is a chiropractic therapy that can help alleviate pain and other symptoms associated with herniated discs, sciatica, and other conditions by gently stretching the spine and reducing pressure on affected nerves. At our chiropractic practice, we offer safe and effective spinal traction therapy to help patients achieve optimal health and wellness.
During a traction session, our experienced chiropractors will use a specialized traction table to gently stretch the spine and reduce pressure on affected nerves. This can help improve spinal alignment, reduce pain, and restore optimal function to the body.
Mechanical traction is a non-surgical and non-invasive approach to treating spinal conditions. It is safe for patients of all ages and can be customized to meet the unique needs and preferences of each patient. At our practice, we take the time to get to know each patient and develop a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to their individual needs and goals.
In addition to providing spinal traction therapy, our practice offers a range of complementary therapies to help patients achieve optimal health and wellness. From chiropractic adjustments to myofascial release, therapeutic exercises, and more, we are committed to providing comprehensive care that addresses the root cause of our patients’ conditions.
If you are experiencing pain or other symptoms related to a spinal condition, traction therapy may be able to help. Contact our office today to schedule an appointment and experience the benefits of expert chiropractic care.

Common questions
What does traction feel like?
A steady pull along the length of the spine that builds and eases in cycles. Most patients find it comfortable and some relax enough to doze. It should never be sharply painful, and the force is reduced if it is.
How is traction different from spinal decompression?
Both work on the same principle. Decompression tables apply the pull in a computer-controlled cycle designed to stop the muscles guarding against the stretch, which allows a more targeted effect at a particular disc. Traction is the simpler and more general of the two.
Who should not have spinal traction?
It is not appropriate after certain spinal surgeries, or with fractures, advanced osteoporosis, and some tumours and infections. Screening for those is exactly what the examination beforehand is for.
